Hello from the Director

Dear Community,

Welcome to Marin Waldorf School's website — I'm so glad you found us.

This fall, we begin our fifty-fourth year of preparing students for the Bay Area's top high schools and beyond. Our approach is simple in principle and rigorous in practice: experience before concept. Students learn fractions by baking, physics by building, public speaking through theater, and earth science by gardening, while warm relationships and daily social-emotional learning build the skills that hold a community together. Over time, our students become original thinkers who connect ideas across disciplines, defend what they find meaningful, and collaborate well with others. What I love most is that they achieve this without the stress so often bundled with academic intensity — because rigorous coursework is balanced by real time in nature, in the arts, and in reflection. 

Our ten-acre campus in Lucas Valley, on the ancestral land of the Coast Miwok, is itself part of the curriculum. Treating the land as a teacher shapes our students in ways a conventional classroom can't replicate.

And while technology is reshaping how children learn, think, and relate to one another faster than at any point in living memory, our educational approach is deliberately low-tech. Drawing on a growing body of developmental research, we first ensure that our students develop a strong relationship with the truth, a sense of their own aesthetic, and the language to express their original thoughts before accessing tools that may complement their authentic work. 

Guiding this community is both humbling and exciting. I work alongside educators who are every bit as dedicated to cultivating students for life — through rigorous academics, a global outlook, and a clear mission to protect and elevate childhood. Our graduates carry that foundation into high school, college, and public life as clear thinkers and moral leaders, equipped with empathy, resourcefulness, adaptability, and a lasting commitment to truth, goodness, and beauty.
