Welcoming the Year of the Rabbit

On Friday, the rain stopped for just a few hours, clearing the skies for our annual Lunar New Year celebration in the amphitheater. Led by Mandarin teacher Sally Li, grades 1-8 performed traditional Chinese songs, dances, and music. Highlights included a wonderful traditional bamboo dance performed by 4th grade and a song about homesickness performed by 6th and 7th, accompanied by Ms. Mallard and student Julian on guitars. The the 7th-8th orchestra also joined with a lovely rendition of Jasmine Flower, a traditional Chinese folk song.

In addition to student performances, we were also treated to a demonstration of the martial art White Crane Silat, performed by several local masters and two MWS second graders. And, like last year, the assembly concluded with a traditional lion dance and fireworks in the amphitheater, always a thrilling experience for our students!
